Resurgent Daniil Medvedev Secures Maiden Title in Nearly 30 Months
Nineteen of Medvedev's 21 titles have been won on hardcourt
A resurgent Daniil Medvedev won his initial title for nearly 30 months with victory over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.
The athlete, a ex- top-ranked player, has endured a torrid period, winning just one win at the major tournaments and suffering a difficult moment at the US Open.
Medvedev's unpredictability on the tennis tour - and struggles with his serving in specific - resulted in him dropping out of the world's top 10 and eventually parting ways with long-time trainer his previous coach.
Presently collaborating with Thomas Johansson and Rohan Goetzke, the tennis star has gradually advanced in the past month - climaxing in a hard-fought 7-5 4-6 6-3 victory over Frenchman Corentin Moutet.
This represents Medvedev's first trophy since the Rome competition and maiden on a hardcourt after that period of that year.
The win also means he has won 21 titles at 21 different tournaments.
"This marks the first occasion I'm at a tournament with my children together, so to get a title is particularly special," commented ranked player Daniil Medvedev.
"This championship is in tribute of my child Victoria, because the first title I achieved when my older daughter her name was delivered was for her."
Medvedev, the former major winner, had failed in his past six championship matches, comprising in that event earlier this year.
Medvedev's defensive approach and regular reactions on the tennis court had prompted commentators to doubt if his ability to play at the highest level was finished.
But the player has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and play positively, backed up by an enhanced serving game.
He recovered from a deficit in the initial set against the difficult Frenchman, winning 4 of the concluding five exchanges to gain the advantage.
Both players exchanged break points in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his maiden tour victory, took control to force a decider.
Moutet saved four early break points in a close third set before the champion broke to that score to close out the victory.
Fittingly, Medvedev secured the title with a point at the net area, with his opponent failing to control a volley after over two and a half hours.
