This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Relationship.
Consider this a dare for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Get comfortable with your partner and watch Together. This 2025 indie hit has now made its launch on a streaming platform on the Hulu service. At first glance, it could look like standard biological terror, but inside Together lies a deep meditation about our choices in loving our partners.
An Introductory Film Investigating The Nuances of Love
Together is the introductory feature for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It features actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for ten years. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their characters, expertly portraying both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.
The plot commences when the couple relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions cease. Together transforms into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the couple's dynamic as it is a film about physical terror.
A Paranormal Spark
While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists fall into an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and managing to escape, a supernatural entity begins influencing the duo. This force creates a paranormal intimacy between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.
The whole movie is a gradually intensifying of scares, weaving in moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but not excessively graphic) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny exchanges (sometimes amidst something grotesque). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.
Nuanced Portrayals
A significant portion of Together is exclusively Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie’s confidence and sense of connection is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his hesitance to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.
Conversely, Tim feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve left the city and far away from his support system. He is terrified of the notion of totally forfeiting his individual identity in another person. This fear is amplified by the reality he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.
The film's most intelligent aspect is that he avoids making one partner or the other the obvious villain.
The couple face the type of challenges that come with most partnerships a decade in. At their core, they continue to care for each other. They find humor with each other, offer support, and open up at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their future together.
Allegory and Meaning
While the paranormal elements in Together act as a metaphor for these fears of codependency and totally devoting oneself to another person, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights work together in a mutually beneficial way.
A Debated Finale
Together’s ending, which remains unspoiled, has sparked debate on the story's concluding statement about enmeshed dynamics. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a compelling reason for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to reconcile.
If you are alone or with a partner, your own interpretation could act as a revealing measure of how you perceive partnership. Will the finale plant anxiety and horror, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and scream at your TV, or simply turn to your significant other and state, “I understand that choice”?
Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on right now.
Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
